About VirtualMeet

VirtualMeet is a video call aggregation app that was created as part of FaithTech's Covid Global Hackathon. The purpose of the app was to help streamline the shift from in person meetings to online meetings due to covid-19. Virtual meet allows users and churches to use the platform of their choice for video call's and livestreams, gathered all in one easily accessible app. The Hackathon was judged by tech legends from Facebook, Google and Nasa. For an in-depth look at this project, view our team's submission on Devpost.

Design Process

This project had a short turnaround time for the hackathon so the team adopted an agile, user-testing-first approach:

Wireframe
Defined user personas and created rapid wireframe prototypes of the app on paper.

Low-Fidelity Testing
These wireframes were turned into interactive prototypes in Figma, which were tested with real users by all three of the team's UXers.

High Fidelity Design
Once we had confirmed our initial design decisions, high fidelity designs were created in Figma using Material Design.

High Fidelity Testing

This final round of prototypes were also tested with prospective users. Once the second round of learning was implemented, the designs were handed off to development to build.

Marketing Materials
Concurrently, we were building all the necessary brand and marketing components to market the app. These can be seen at virtualmeet.com.

Example Key Findings

Accessibility: One key issue found in early user testing was that the original brand colours (yellow and pink) would not pass accessibility parameters for anyone with a visual impairment. These colours were used for background gradients behind white text in headings and on buttons, so it was not going to have enough contrast for visibility. To facilitate readability the yellow was swapped for a purple gradient that can be seen in the app and branding.

Needed an option for private events: Security was a larger concern than we expected for our users. To solve we added the ability to host private events.

The language needed to be clearer: to create a universally understandable experience for users who are more versed in one video platform over another (for example Zoom over Google Meets etc. have different language for the same function in their platform.)
